We have been working with a unit of work based around the concept of relationships and families. Our focus question has been “Who lives in your house?” to remove the pressure of working out who is considered part of a family for some students.
As a part of the unit, we have been watching and discussing the relationships of family members in some popular Indonesian folktales. We have watched Timun Mas, Bawang Merah Bawang Putih and also a version of the Ramayana – which tied in with our exploration of what families do and celebrate together. Another story we watched was “Gatherers from the sky” which told the story of an older Minangkabau couple who inherited a monkey, Bobo. All these stories lead to some interesting discussions about why we have stories like these and what they might be used for, what stories we were reminded of and finally, how families grow and change.
Do you have some stories that you have used to discuss family? Sampai nanti!
