Sang Kancil is a well known character from Indonesian folktales.
He is the size of a cat, but manages to trick even the biggest creatures from the jungle.
There are Sang kancil story apps, for example the ever popular “Sang kancil dan buaya” and “Sang kancil dan harimau” are both available from itunes.
The R-1 classes at both sites have been sharing stories via classmade bigbooks. We also used puppets to retell the stories in English and used imovie to record and share with the other R-1 class. We read simple Indonesian text versions of the stories, watched the app versions (in English) and then watched the utube versions of the stories – we found these versions very funny! We then retold our own version of a Sang Kancil story using puppets.
Our latest challenge: we watched Sang Kancil dan kera and had to re write the story in English. We then used the sock puppet app to re enact the story in English. Lucu sekali! Next challenge will be using “Story jumper” to create a class text of the story.
Google utube Sang kancil for different versions of Sang Kancil stories in Bahasa Indonesia. Or try Pada zaman dahulu…
Last year, we even put a Sang kancil story to music and created our own musical (no singing!) with instruments and voices creating a English version of the stories.
Another time( probably 2 or 3 years ago now!!), we created a class wayang kulit version of Sang kancil dan buaya, which is still being watched by my junior primary classes today!
